Social movements are interesting because they challenge and change our understanding of what is just or normal. My general approach to understanding movements is relational: I investigate the mechanisms of network formation and network break-down. In work with Walter Nicholls, I examine how movements come together or fall apart in urban spaces. My Dynamics of Power charts the ascendance of a movement that challenged multiculturalism and political correctness in the name of Dutch values and culture. I’ve also developed an interest in the interplay between communication technologies and movement development, for instance, in the case of Anonymous.
